Warrior bats explode in CCAA opener

TURLOCK -- Saturday's wet weather wasn't enough to slow down the Cal State Stanislaus baseball team's offense, as the Warriors pounded out 24 runs on 21 hits en route to a CCAA-opening doubleheader sweep of San Francisco State, 13-1 and 11-4.

Rain storms delayed or postponed several Northern California CCAA match-ups Saturday in baseball and softball, but the quality of Warrior Field allowed San Francisco State and the Warriors to push through both games. The wins push the Warriors' home record to 9-1 this season, with the only loss coming to Western Oregon in the season opener on Feb. 5. The Warriors are now 9-3 overall and 2-0 in CCAA play.

Dennis Wolfe had a monster day for the Warriors, going a combined 6-9 with eight RBIs and two stolen bases. Freshman Dante Palacios also had a big day, going 5-6 with 5 RBIs, including a 4-4 showing in game two with four RBIs.

Eric Federico earned his first decision of the season in game one, picking up a win with six innings of work where he allowed just one unearned run and struck out two. The Warrior bullpen continued its dominance by limiting the Gators to two hits and no runs over the final three innings.

In game one, the Warriors took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and added another run in the second to go up 3-0. San Francisco State found their way onto the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning to make the score 3-1, but that was as close as they would get all day.

The Warriors scored five runs in the seventh inning without a single hit. San Francisco State granted the Warriors 13 free base runners in game one via eight walks and five hit batsmen, which in the end made the difference between the Warriors getting 13 runs on 10 hits and the Gators getting just one run on eight hits.

Warrior ace Marquis Fleming took the mound in game two and earned his third consecutive victory despite giving up four earned runs in five innings of work, thanks largely to the Warrior offense who gave Fleming nine runs of support in the first four innings.

The only inning the Warriors didn't score in was the sixth. San Francisco State dug its own hole in game two with four errors. Gator starter Beau Moorehead was racked for eight runs, five earned, in three innings pitched.

Cal State Stanislaus will continue the four-game series with San Francisco State on Tuesday as part of a rescheduling. Single games Friday and Sunday at San Francisco have been rescheduled for a doubleheader on Tuesday due to inclement weather.

The Warriors return home on Friday, Feb. 29 for the start of a four-game series against Cal State L.A. with a single game starting at 2 p.m.
