SEASIDE —
Jessica Gaumnitz provided the pitching in the opener and
Jessica Scholl the offensive power in game two as the Cal State Stanislaus softball team sweep Cal State Monterey Bay Saturday, 2-0 and 6-2. The sweep gives the Warriors a four-game series split at Monterey Bay to start conference play.
Cal State Stanislaus is now 5-9 overall and 2-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Cal State Monterey Bay is now 10-7, 5-3 in league play.
Gaumnitz went the distance in the shutout, scattering six hits while striking out four. The ace improved to 3-2 on the season. Offensively in game one, the Warriors managed two hits in the victory. CSUS loaded the bases in the fourth inning after a walk, a hit-batsman and a CSUMB error. Megan Franksen, who was hit by a pitch, later scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Jen Arnold.
In the Warrior sixth,
Alyssa Guzman singled in pinch-runner
Teresa Montalvo for the 2-0 lead.
In game two, Scholl singled in two runs in the four-run first inning for Cal State Stanislaus. Her single up the middle scored Arnold, who singled earlier, and
Casey Stephenson. Scholl later belted a solo home run in the sixth inning to finish the game 2-for-3 with three RBIs. It was Scholl's third home run of the season.
Arnold picked up the win in the series finale, going 5 2/3 innings, allowing just one run on four hits.
The Warriors will play on their home field on campus for the first time this season next weekend when they host No. 6 Humboldt State for a four-game set. The series opener is Friday at 1 p.m.
