TURLOCK — The Cal State Stanislaus Warriors softball team was resilient in both games of today's California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader, rallying from behind before dropping both games to No. 6 Humboldt State.
Behind Lizzy Prescott, the Lumberjacks swept Cal State Stanislaus, 2-1 and 6-3, Saturday afternoon at Warrior Softball Field. The Warriors dropped to 5-13 overall and 2-6 in the CCAA and has lost 9 of their last 11. Humboldt State improved to 15-4 overall and 8-0 in conference play.
In game one on Saturday, a pitching duel between Prescott and Stanislaus ace
Jessica Gaumnitz lasted until the seventh inning. With the game tied at 0-0, Humboldt struck first with an one-out triple by Nikki Ketteringham, who later scored on a single to center by Francesca West.
In the home half of the seventh, Warrior shortstop
Meghan Franksen took Prescott's second pitch to deep center field for her second home run of the season to tie the score.
The Lumberjacks then pushed across a run in the eight when Joanna Schultz scored on a Caitlin Klug double for the go-ahead run to hand the Warriors' a heart-break loss.
The Warriors got on the board first in game two as Franksen singled with to outs and later scored on a Jen Arnold looper to right. Franksen, who had been in an offensive slump, appeared to have turned the corner as she went 2-for-3 in the second game.
Humboldt State scored three times in the second on a walk, three singles and a double for a 3-1 lead. HSU would add another score in the fifth inning before the Warriors again staged a rally.
Casey Stephenson drove in
Britney Borba and Franksen with an one-out double to left to pull CSUS within one at 4-3. Borba had started the sixth with a walk and Franksen singled to run and advanced to second on a throw. Stanislaus, however, would strand Stephenson at second base to end the inning.
Arnold started the second game and went five innings, scattering seven hits and allowed four runs to pick up the loss.
Stacey Hains tossed two innings in relief. Hains fanned four batters and walked two, and gave up two runs in the seventh.
Cal State Stanislaus travels to Chico next weekend for a four-game series against the Chico State Wildcats. The first doubleheader is at 1 p.m. on Friday.
