Warriors creep closer to playoffs with doubleheader sweep

TURLOCK -- Cal State Stanislaus' playoff picture became a little clearer Sunday with an 11-4, 3-0 doubleheader sweep of CCAA-leading No. 6 Sonoma State at Warrior Field.

With fifth-place Cal State LA idle Sunday, the Warriors' two wins solidified their fourth place position and put them 1 1/2 games ahead of the Golden Eagles for the final spot in the CCAA Championship Tournament, to be played May 8-10. Cal State LA will close out the season on the road against last-place San Francisco State with a four-game series starting Friday. The Warriors will travel to Southern California to finish the season with four games against Cal Poly Pomona beginning Friday.

To clinch a spot in the conference tournament, the Warriors will have to win at least three out of four in Pomona, considering Cal State LA must win every one of its final games to get in.

The wins move the Warriors' record to 33-18 overall and 21-11 in the CCAA. The Seawolves fall to 39-9 overall and 23-7 in CCAA play. The 33 wins are a new school record for the Warriors at the NCAA Division II level. The overall record for wins in a season is 36, set by the 1976 NCAA Division III fourth place team that went 36-19.

The 21 wins in CCAA play ties a school record for conference wins. The Warriors won 21 CCAA games in 2003, the last time the team made it into the postseason. The Warriors finish their 2008 home schedule with a 26-9 record.

Game one was a close, back-and-fourth battle until the seventh inning when the Warriors exploded for seven runs on seven hits to take an 11-3 lead and never look back. A total of four homeruns were hit between the two teams. A two-run moonshot to left field off the bat of Sonoma State's Konrad Thieme, his 14th of the year, tied the game at 3-3 in the sixth inning.

Jake Oketani hit his second homerun of the year in the fourth inning to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead. Kyle Loretelli led off the fifth inning with his 10th homerun of the year to put the Warriors up 3-1. Ryan Averkieff hit a pinch-hit homerun over the scoreboard in right-center field in the ninth inning to make the score 11-4 Warriors.

"This might be our best day of the year," said Warrior Head Coach Kenny Leonesio. "That first game scoring those runs, getting all those hits, it was good."

Andrew DeMott shined on Senior Day by throwing 3 1/3 innings, striking out four and giving up just two hits for the victory. DeMott's appearance was his 29th of 2008, tying a single-season record at Cal State Stanislaus. His 1.24 ERA is also on track to set a single-season school record.

Oketani missed hitting for the cycle in game one, needing just a double in a 3-for-3 day with three runs scored. Senior Jeff Bellotti was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, senior Dennis Wolfe went 3-for-5 and senior Adam Fonville was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored.

Loretelli was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a double, which broke the single-season school record for doubles. He would get another double in game two, bringing his season total to 23.

In a brilliant final act, senior ace Marquis Fleming threw his single-season school record fifth complete game shutout by striking out 10, walking none and giving up only four hits to move his record to 10-3.

"It was a big day," Fleming said about Senior Day. "I've been here for four years and I just wanted to make this day special."

Fleming retired 13 consecutive batters from the second to sixth innings. His eighth strikeout of the day was his 100th of the season. He now is just four strikeouts away from breaking the Cal State Stanislaus career record of 279, set by Warrior Athletics Hall of Famer Jeff Blobaum from 1979-82. Fleming is also 11 strikeouts from breaking the single-season record of 112, set by Blobaum in 1982.

"It's kind of a tough day because I'm going to miss him a lot," said Leonesio about Fleming. "He's probably the (most) favorite player I've ever coached. He's been great."

"I'm really happy I came here. From the first day I talked to Coach Leonesio about coming here. I almost went to a JC, but I'm really glad I made this choice. He's a great coach," Fleming said.

An RBI single by Oketani in the bottom of the first inning put the Warriors up early, 1-0. That was all Fleming needed, but a two-run homerun from Jacob Thelen in the fourth inning, his second of the season, gave him some room to work with.

The Warriors will play a single game against Cal Poly Pomona at 3 p.m. Friday, then play a doubleheader at noon on Saturday, then finish the season with a single game at noon Sunday. The Broncos are the team that knocked the Warriors out of playoff contention in the final weekend of play in 2006.

"There's never an easy day in this league," Leonesio said. "It is going to be senior day (in Pomona) and we need to go in and win three of four and carry the momentum."
