UC San Diego takes 2-1 series lead with doubleheader split

4/5/2008 5:20:09 PM

TURLOCK -- Warrior ace Marquis Fleming ended his personal two-game losing streak with a one-hit shutout in game one and Matt Rossman struck out 11 in five innings for the Tritons to take game two as the No. 29 Cal State Stanislaus Warriors and No. 12 UC San Diego split a doubleheader, 7-0 and 5-2, Saturday at Warrior Field.

The split keeps UC San Diego in second place in the CCAA and moves the Tritons to 30-8 overall and 13-5 in the CCAA. The third place Warriors are now 25-11 overall and 17-5 in the CCAA. Cal State Stanislaus' victory in game one ended the Tritons' winning streak at eight games.

A solid single to left field by UC San Diego's Vance Albitz to lead off the game was all the offense UC San Diego would see in game one, as Fleming struck out nine and allowed just three other baserunners via a walk and two hit batsmen. Fleming threw four pitches in the ninth inning to close out his fifth complete game victory of the season.

The Warriors got on the board in the third inning with solo homeruns from Jeff Bellotti and Jake Thelen, both players' first round-trippers of the season. That gave Fleming a 2-0 lead, which was all he needed as he cruised through the game, which thanks to Fleming's efficiency, lasted just 2 hours, 25 minutes.

The Warriors blew up on UC San Diego starter Guido Knudsen in the bottom of the eighth for five runs, thanks in part to three Triton errors. Dennis Wolfe was hit by a pitch with one out and moved to third when Thelen reached on an error by Triton third baseman Josh Tanner. Jake Oketani hit an RBI single, Dante Palacios walked to load the bases, and pinch hitter Leandro Dottavio hit a two-RBI single to put the Warriors up 5-0.

Dottavio and Palacios moved to second and third, respectively, on an error by UC San Diego catcher Michael Benton, who had trouble fielding the throw home when Oketani scored from second on Dottavio's single. Both players would score when Chase Perez hit a sharp ground ball to the Tritons' second baseman Garrett Imeson, who booted the ball all the way into left field, giving Cal State Stanislaus a 7-0 lead.

The story of game two was Rossman, who recorded 15 outs, 11 of which were strikeouts. Rossman earned his seventh win of the season to improve to 7-2 after only giving up four hits and walking two. Triton closer Keith Noe got his second save of the series in 1 1/3 innings of work, his ninth of the season.

UC San Diego took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by Chris Franco, then added three more in the top of the second to take a 4-0 lead. The Warriors came back with single runs in the bottom of the second and third to make the score 4-2, but Rossman and the UCSD bullpen proved to be too much and held them scoreless the rest of the way.

The Tritons added an insurance run in the top of the seventh with back-to-back doubles by Evan Kehoe and Franco to make the final score 5-2. The Warriors stranded nine runners, including leaving the bases loaded in the sixth when the team's leading homerun hitter Kyle Loretelli hit a soft fly ball to left field to end the inning.

Eric Federico started game two for the Warriors. In 6 1/3 innings pitched, he struck out five and gave up three earned runs, earning the loss to fall to 4-3 on the season. Thelen went 3-for-4 with two doubles in game two.

Kehoe led the Tritons in game two by going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Garrett Imeson, who entered the series leading the CCAA in batting with a .409 average, has now gone 1-for-7 with three walks in the series, his lone hit coming in the seventh inning of game two Saturday.

The series finale is set for noon on Sunday at Warrior Field.
