CHICO -- Cal State Stanislaus looked to have their first-ever win against Sonoma State in the CCAA Championship Tournament, but after a back-and-forth battle, it would be the long ball that would win it for the Seawolves, as the Warriors were eliminated Friday night, 13-11, in 11 innings at Nettleton Stadium.
Warrior starting pitcher
Eric Federico gave Cal State Stanislaus the solid start that they needed, going 6 1/3 innings and striking out six while walking just one. Federico left in the seventh inning with a 6-1 lead after putting two runners on, but it would not stand.
Sonoma State took an early 1-0 lead with an RBI single from catcher Ian Bridges. The Warriors jumped right back in the game in the bottom half of the inning when
Kyle Loretelli hit the third pitch he saw over the right field fence to tie the game at 1-1.
Loretelli's biggest hit of the game would come later, though, with the Warriors trailing 11-8 in the bottom of the 10th. With runners on the corners and no outs, Loretelli hit his second homerun of the game to the opposite field, tying the game at 11-11 and breathing life into the Warriors. The rally quickly died, as the next three batters were retired in a row.
Sonoma State's Travis Babin hit a two-out two-run homerun to right field off of Warrior closer
Andrew Troncale in the top of the 11th to give the Seawolves a 13-11 lead that would eventually stand. Reliever Nick O'Brien took the victory to improve to 4-3 and Troncale took the loss to fall to 3-2 in a game that lasted more than 4 1/2 hours.
Loretelli finished 3-for-6 with four RBIs and three runs scored.
Jeff Hughes scored three runs and
David Contreras went 2-for-5 wuth two runs scored.
Momentum from Loretelli's first inning homerun carried, as the Warriors would get another run in the third after Sonoma State starter Rashad Tucker balked in a run with the bases loaded.
Jeff Bellotti hit a two-run double in a three-run fourth inning and the Warriors got one more run in the fifth on an RBI double by
Adam Fonville to go up 6-1.
The Seawolves' comeback began in the sixth when Konrad Thieme hit a solo homerun over the railroad tracks beyond right field to make the score 6-2. It continued in the seventh after
Andrew Stueve, who started the Warriors' early game on Friday, entered in relief. Stueve gave up two RBI singles to cut the lead to 6-4.
The Warriors got an insurance run in the seventh, and after a scoreless eighth, Stueve went back to the mound with a chance to send the Warriors to Saturday's championship game against Chico State. Instead, Stueve gave up a two-out RBI single. Stueve ran the count to 2-2 against Thieme and was one strike away from victory, but Thieme hit his second homerun of the game to the same spot to tie the score at 7-7 and send it into extra innings.
In the top of the 10th, Seawolves center fielder Nick Noste hit a three-run triple and later scored on a wild pitch to give Sonoma State an 11-7 lead. Noste finished the game 5-for-6 with three RBI and four runs scored, tying the tournament record for hits in a game and runs scored in a game.
Thieme's two homeruns tied a tournament record, and the 24 total runs scored in the game was one short of tying a tournament record. In the end, five different Sonoma State starters had mulitple-hit games.
Sonoma State committed six errors in the game. Both teams stranded nine runners. Sonoma finished with 17 hits to the Warriors' nine.
The Warriors, who entered the CCAA Tournament ranked No. 3 in the NCAA West Region, will likely qualify for the NCAA West Regional Championship that begins on Thursday. Official announcements of the host site and participating teams will be made after the conclusion of the tournament.
