CHICO — Regional titan Sonoma State scored nine runs on 13 hits with two outs in the game en route to a 10-4 win over Cal State Stanislaus at the NCAA Division II West Region Championship at Nettleton Stadium at Chico State.
With the loss, the No. 29 ranked Warriors end their school record season with a 37-22 overall record. Sonoma State remains unbeaten in the tournament and moves on in the winner's bracket and will face either UC San Diego or Chico State on Saturday at 11 a.m.
The Warriors appeared in their first regional tournament as a Division II program and set a school record with 37 wins.
"It was a very good season. I am proud of the team and what they accomplished this year," CSUS head coach
Kenny Leonesio said. "I am most happy about the fact that the senior were able to experience the playoffs, it was something they talked about for years in the program and for them to be able to achieve their goals was great for them."
No. 4 Sonoma State jumped on top early with a two-run homer by Konrad Thieme in the first inning. The Seawolves then tagged on eight runs from innings five through seven for a 10-3 lead.
Thieme's first inning homer was his third in his last four at bats against the Warriors. The Seawolve catcher finished the game 2-for-6 with three RBI — he did strike out twice in his final two at-bats. As a team, SSU scattered 17 hits with Mark Pestroich, Nick Nosti David Adler each with three. In their first game of the tournament, Sonoma State pounded out 20 hits and scored 15 runs on Thursday against Nebraska-Kearney.
"To me it's the best Sonoma State team I've seen (over the years)," Leonesio said. "They came up with a lot of two-out hits. Give them credit, they are a very good team. Obviously we didn't have the most talent but (we) fought until the end in every game."
Down six runs, the Warriors got two runners on in the ninth with one out, but Sonoma reliever John Bonifacini got a strike out, walked
Jake Oketani before getting
Jacob Thelen to line out to short for the final out.
Stanislaus starter
Eric Federico was charged with the loss. After allowing the homer to Thieme, Federico retired 9 out of the next 10 Warriors until the Sonoma State fifth where the Seawolves put together four hits to score three runs. Thieme factored in the scoring again with a double to right to score Ian Bridges.
Federico got out of a major jam in the fourth inning as the Seawolves rallied with two outs. Pestroich singled to right and Tyrese McDaniel doubled down the right field line to set up two base runners in scoring position with Travis Babin, CCAA tournament MVP, at the plate. Federico then got Babin to strikeout swinging on a hanging change-up to end the inning.
A golden opportunity for the Warriors was the bottom of the fourth as Stanislaus loaded the bases with two outs. After Thelen singled to start the inning, with two outs
Tom Long and
Jeff Hughes both singled to the shortstop to load the bases. Sonoma State ace Matt Means, however, got
Kyle Loretelli to weakly fouled out to the third baseman to end the inning.
Means went the distance and picked up the win. He gave up four runs on 10 hits while striking out six and walked two.
The Warriors struck for a run in the third inning with
Dennis Wolfe coming up with a two-out RBI single to left to score Long, who had walked to start the inning and advanced on a Loretelli single.
