Warriors move to Championship Game with win over CSUMB

5/2/2008 4:11:23 PM

ARCATA — Jessica Scholl banged out four hits, including a solo home run, to help Cal State Stanislaus earn a 8-4 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay and remain undefeated after the second day of the California Collegiate Athletic Association Softball Championships on Friday.

The victory sends the Warriors into Saturday's 11 a.m. championship game, where they'll face the winner of Friday's fourth game that matches Cal State San Bernardino and Cal State Monterey Bay. Either of those two teams would have to defeat CSU Stanislaus twice on Saturday to claim the tournament title.

"I was relaxed. We had a good team meeting last night as a team and my teammates took the pressure off," Scholl said. "I was just comfortable at the plate today."

Scholl and Kimiko Wright, who had three hits for the Warriors, led an explosive offense that gained an early lead and never trailed. Jessica Gaumnitz had another strong pitching outing, holding the Otters without a hit until the fifth inning before Jennifer Arnold relieved her to close out the game.

Gaumnitz, who took over as the Warriors' career leader in wins with 54, finished with four strikeouts and no walks for the second straight game to improve her record to 16-7 overall. She was touched for three hits and two runs in the fifth, including a solo home run by Shae Olds.

"The defense was awesome as usual and they made it easy for me, making plays behind me," Gaumnitz said. "The offense also came through today and kept scoring runs. I am honored to have the record, but I couldn't have done it without my teammates."

The Stanislaus defense has been flawless in the tournament while the other teams in the tournament, including host HSU, are making numerous defensive miscues.

To open the scoring, Cal State Stanislaus took advantage of the first of four Otters' errors when Arnold reached on a bad throw by the catcher after striking out. A sacrifice bunt moved Arnold to second, and Scholl's single sent her home to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead after the top of the second.

Cal State Stanislaus put up three more runs in the third, all after two outs had been recorded. A pair of walks and a single preceded Scholl's single that drove in two runs before another run came in on an error by the CSUMB center fielder.

Ahead 4-2 entering the sixth inning, the Warriors struck for two more runs, Scholl's double starting the rally that was again assisted by an Otters' error. CSUMB tightened the game again with two runs on only one hit in the sixth, but CSU Stanislaus countered with back-to-back home runs by Alyssa Guzmanand Scholl in the top of the seventh.

Stanislaus, now 19-5 when playing away from Turlock this season, scored seven of the eight runs with two outs.

The Warriors move into Saturday's game carrying a 29-21 overall record. CSU Monterey Bay saw its nine-game winning streak ended, falling to 35-23 overall.
