Warriors lose to Sonoma State in CCAA Tourney opener

5/8/2008 6:06:25 PM

CHICO -- It was deja vu all over again for the Warriors Thursday in the opener of the CCAA Championship baseball tournament. Sonoma State defeated the Warriors, 5-1, just as they did in 2003.

Warrior ace Marquis Fleming took his first loss since March 29 after a rough fifth inning. Fleming had a no-hitter through 4 1/3 innings and was playing his part in a great pitchers duel until David Adler chopped a single over Fleming's head and up the middle for a single.

The Seawolves followed Adler with two infield singles, one off the glove of a diving Adam Fonville at first base. All three singles would score thanks to a sacrifice fly by Ian Bridges and a two-RBI single by Konrad Thieme to give Sonoma State a 3-0 lead.

The loss drops the Warriors to 36-20 overall, while Sonoma State moves to 43-12 overall on the season. The Warriors will now play against the loser of the Chico State-UC San Diego match-up at 11 a.m. Friday. In 2003, the Warriors also opened the CCAA Tournament in Chico against Sonoma State with a loss. In that game, the Warriors held a 1-0 lead before the Seawolves scored twice in the bottom of the ninth to win.

Fleming tied the single-season school record for strikeouts with six on Thursday, bringing his season total to 112. The record also belongs to former Warrior Jeff Blobaum, who struck out 112 batters in 1982.

Seawolves starter Matt Means pitched seven strong innings, scattering five hits and giving up just one run while striking out four to move his record to 8-1. Travis Babin entered in relief and threw two strong innings to put the game away.

Sonoma State would get two more runs in the seventh. Kris Haycock led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch and went to third on a groundout. CCAA Most Valuable Player Konrad Thieme was intentionally walked, and then Adam Fonville sent a potential inning-ending double play ball into center field with an errant throw, allowing a run to score and putting runners at first and second.

Both runners would move up on a wild pitch and Thieme would score on an RBI single by Mark Pestorich to give the Seawolves a 5-1 lead.

The Warriors got their lone run in the eighth inning after Kyle Loretelli led off with a walk and Jacob Thelen hit an RBI double in the left field corner to score him.

Adam Fonville continued his recent hot streak by going 3-for-4 with a double. Jeff Hughes was 1-for-3 with a walk and Kyle Loretelli was 1-for-4 with a walk and a run scored.

Game three of the 2008 CCAA championship baseball tournament will be broadcast online at warriorathletics.com with the first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m. Live stats of the game will also be available.
