Warriors drop CCAA opener

LOS ANGELES -- The Cal State Stanislaus Warriors dropped the first game of a four game series at Cal State L.A., 8-4, in the CCAA opener for both teams on Friday afternoon.

The Golden Eagles got on the board first, scoring two runs in the second inning.  After a passed ball, runners were on second and third with two outs when CSULA's second baseman Brendan McQuaid delivered an two RBI single.

The Warriors (3-5, 0-1 CCAA) answered right back with two runs of their own in the top half of the third inning.  Kory Vitato led of the frame with a solo home run.  Then after a two out walk to Vince Hungerford, Casey Filkins knocked a ball of the right center field wall to score Hungerford and knot the game at 2-2.

CSULA (3-4, 1-0 CCAA) took the lead for good with back-to-back two out doubles in the bottom of the third.  They then added four more runs in the fifth.  A big throwing error on a a sacrifice bunt led to two unearned runs and the Golden Eagles opened up the game making it 7-2.

The Warriors added two more runs late, both coming via solo home runs.  David Contreras belted one in the seventh and Doug Porras added one in the ninth.  However, it was not enough and the Golden Eagles held on for an 8-4 victory.

Contreras finished with two hits and Andrew Graves also collected two hits.

The two teams will resume the series Saturday with a doubleheader, game one is scheduled to start at noon.
