Stanislaus blows out Simpson despite errors

TURLOCK -- Despite committing seven errors, the Cal State Stanislaus baseball team scattered 11 hits and scored 14 runs to blow past Simpson University in a non-conference game on Saturday.

Vince Hungerford had two hits and drove in three runs while Corey Conflenti hit two doubles to lead the Warriors offensive charge as Cal State Stanislaus improved to 10-11 overall.

Simpson had just three hits off six Warrior pitchers as the Red Hawks fall to 6-14-1.

Andrew Stueve, Kory Wallace, Leonard Giammanco, Derek Eaton, Michael Johnson and Eric Cendejas all pitched for the Warriors.

The Warriors jumped out on top in the first with three runs on just two hits, thanks to two walks and two hit-bats-men for an early 3-0 lead. Stanislaus tagged on a run in each of the second through fourth innings, plus a run in the sixth for a 7-0 lead.

Simpson finally got on the board in the seventh with two unearned runs, but the Warriors scored six time to run away from the Red Hawks.

In the Warriors seventh, they sent 10 batters to the plate to score six runs on just four hits and two SU errors. Hungerford delivered the big blow with a two-run double. Colton Beatty and John Canepa followed with singles. Then two outs later, Conflenti drove a double to center to score another run.

The Stanislaus defense was not sharp on Saturday as it committed seven errors, but the mistakes only led to two unearned runs. Simpson made four errors in the game.

Wallace earned the win with two innings of work. The six Warrior pitchers combined for eight strikeouts.
