TURLOCK -- The Warriors scored early then had to hold on in the late innings as they opened the CCAA series with a 4-1 win over Cal State Monterey Bay.
Cal State Stanislaus improved to 12-14 overall and 8-9 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Cal State Monterey Bay dropped to 6-24 and 2-19 in conference play.
John Canepa went 3-for-4 with a triple to lead the Stanislaus charge offensively while
Corey Conflenti was 2-for-4 with a RBI.
Michael Johnson singled in Conflenti in the first inning after Conflenti led off the with a single. The Warriors also had two runs in the second with Conflenti driving in
Vince Hungerford.
Ross Gonsalves scored on a wild pitch to give the Warriors a 3-0 lead.
Stanislaus starter
Vinny Pacchetti gave up seven hits but kept the Otters off the scoreboard until the sixth inning. Pacchetti struck out six and pitched six innings to earn the win before turning it over to
Leonard Giammanco.
Giammanco tossed the final three innings and gave up four hits to pick up the save. Giammanco earned the save as Monterey Bay rallied in the final three innings.
In the CSUMB eighth, the Otters worked the bases loaded with a couple of hits, but Giammanco got a fly out to end the inning. CSUMB also left two runners on base in the seventh.
The same two teams will play again in a doubleheader as the four-game set shifts to Seaside on Saturday.
