TURLOCK — The Lumberjacks continued to swing their bats against the Warriors as they spoil senior day and parents weekend for Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday.
Humboldt State jumped out on top with a five-run first to win game one, 8-0, in six innings then completed the sweep over Cal State Stanislaus with a 5-2 game two win. Humboldt State (26-21, 15-13 CCAA), appears to be on a roll, has now won 10 of its last 12 games and plays San Francisco State Sunday and Monday in Arcata.
For the Warriors, they end their home portion of the schedule, and are now 13-32-1 overall and 8-24 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Prior to the start of the doubleheader, seniors
Jennifer Arnold,
Erica McIntyre,
Nikky Rissetto and
Stacey Hains were recognized.
Humboldt State used four doubles -- some of them lost in the sun and wind by Stanislaus left fielder
Sloan Hanna — to key a five-run first inning to start the day. Felicia Viveiros' double drove in two scores and Lindsay Warren doubled in Viveiros to cap the rally.
That was more than HSU starter Gracie Perez needed as she, though not powering, quiet the Warriors' bats. McIntyre was the only Warrior managed to get hits off of Perez, who struck out only three and walked five.
Stanislaus let a golden opportunity to answer back in the bottom of the first get away. After two outs, McIntyre singed ahead of two walks to load the bases. But a hard hit liner hit by
Veronica Luna was stabbed by Warren at third base to end the inning.
The Warriors had two on in the fourth, but with two outs, Hanna lined a shot to center to end that rally. McIntyre would hit a hustle-double in the fifth inning to center but that was all of offense Stanislaus could manage.
In game two, HSU got on the board in the third and built a 5-0 lead after Nikki Ketteringham belted a solo home run in the sixth.
Cal State Stanislaus pushed across two runs in the home half of the sixth to finally put some pressure on HSU starter Vaneza Hoover of Ceres.
Sarah Locarnini led off the inning with a single through the right side. Then a Rissetto single to left set up a first-and-second situation with nobody out.
McIntyre picked up a hit up the middle to score Locarnini. HSU centerfielder Ketteringham's throw hit Rissetto on her way to third, as scored to make it 5-2.
Locarnini finished game two with two hits while Arnold and
Cassandra Carlos each had a double to lead Stanislaus.
The Warriors will wrap up their season on the road with a four-game set at Chico State next weekend.
