TURLOCK — Senior pitcher
Eric Cendejas finished off a great senior day for the Warriors as he tossed a three-hit shutout in the home finale to help Cal State Stanislaus sweep Sonoma State on Sunday.
In front of a season-best crowd, Cendejas and the Warriors won game two 5-0 after taking the first game, 9-6, in come-front-behind fashion. With the twinbill sweep, the Warriors closed out the home schedule with another winning record of 15-10.
Overall, Cal State Stanislaus improved to 19-22 overall and 15-17 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association with two four-game sets to go on the road. Sonoma State falls to 20-24, 13-19 in the CCAA.
After giving up a single in the second, Cendejas sat down 10 of next 11 batters with a Seawolve reaching on an error. He did not allowed another hit until the fifth inning. After a lead off walk and a single to start the Sonoma seventh, Cendejas got Randy Wells to ground into a double play. He then struck out Austin Hogans to end the game with the game ball in his senior catcher
Seth Hudson's hands.
Cendejas allowed just three singles, struck out six and walked two in the seven-inning complete game shutout to improve to 4-5.
Michael Johnson delivered the big blow for Stanislaus with a three-run jack in the third to score seniors
Douglas Porras and
David Contreras to make it a 5-0 game. The first two runs came in the second innings on back-to-back doubles by senior first baseman
Joey Blakely and
Vince Hungerford after a lead off walk by
Alex Zanini, a senior infielder.
In game one, trailing 3-0, the Warriors used a five-run fourth to take over after SSU third baseman failed to catch an infield fly ball.
Colton Beatty had a run-scoring single and
Corey Conflenti drove in two runs with a single to right to key the rally.
Sonoma State would surge ahead and regain the lead, 6-5, in the sixth inning, but Stanislaus came back again.
Andrew Graves started the rally with a single and moved over to second on a ground out. A walk to
Ross Gonsalves later, Porras pounded a three-run home run to right to give the Warriors an 8-6 lead.
Cal State Stanislaus tagged on another run in the seventh after Hungerford drove in Groves, who had doubled to make it 9-6.
Leonard Giammanco pitched four solid innings in relief as he allowed just a run -- a Wells home run in the sixth -- on two hits to pick up the win. Starter
Andrew Stueve lasted five innings and gave up five runs -- three earned -- on five hits.
Graves went 3-for-4 while Porras, Contreras and Hungerford each finished with two hits to assist the Warriors end a seven-game skid.
