CARSON — Cal State Dominguez Hills exploded for eight runs in one inning in game one then use two homers by the same player in the final two innings of the nightcap to sweep Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday.
Abel Medina's three-run blast highlighted an eight-run fifth as CSUDH won game one 13-6. Then Steve Carrillo homered in both the sixth and seventh innings to lift the Toros, 7-5, in game two. Also in game two, Kevin Pillar doubled in the second innings to set a new NCAA record extending his hitting streak to 50 games.
Cal State Dominguez Hills,
now 37-15 overall and 27-12 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association all but secured the No. 2 seed spot in next weekend's CCAA Baseball Championship tournament in Stockton.
For the Warriors, they fall to 22-26 overall and 18-21 in conference play with Sunday's game at CSUDH as the season finale. Stanislaus could still finish fifth with a win over the Toros on Sunday. The Warriors are currently tied with Cal Pomona, both at 18-21.
With Stanislaus leading 3-1, the Toros bats came alive in the fifth against CSUS starter
Kory Wallace. A fielding error started the innings, following by a single and a flyout. Then a bunt single and walk loaded the bases full of Toros.
Carlos Leyva drove in a run, then Andrew Baslow singled two just before Medina's three-run shot. In the end it was eight runs on eight hits, including a homer, two doubles and a Warrior error for the big inning. CSUDH would score four more in the sixth to put the game away.
For Stanislaus,
Michael Johnson went 3-for-5 and drove in three scores.
John Canepa and Ross Gonslaves both also had three hits.
Corey Conflenti was 2-for-4 and scored three times.
In game two, Stanislaus has hanging on to a 4-3 lead until the bottom of the sixth. Carrillo belted a solo shot to start the rally and Benavidez later scored on a Levya single to give the Toros a 5-4 lead.
The Warriors would tied the game with a two-out rally in the seventh.
Casey Filkins delivered a pinch-hit single p the middle and came around to score on a
David Contreras double to left-center field to even the score.
CSUDH then used its own two-out rally started by Pillar's single ahead of Carrillo's walk-off two-run homer to end the game.
Leonard Giammanco got the start in the nightcap and gave up five runs on 10 hits in six innings. Phillip Quade tossed the final frame and got a strikeout looking and a ground out before Pillar's single that extended the inning.
Contreras finished with two hits and drove in two runs to lead the Warriors in game two.
Joey Blakely also drove in two scores.
