TURLOCK – The Cal State Stanislaus baseball team used patience at the plate to secure an 18-8 win over Academy of Art Friday afternoon.
The Warriors have extended their win streak to three straight games and are now 3-0 overall.
Kory Wallace was the Warriors starter and the winning pitcher in game one of a four game series against the visiting Urban Knights. Wallace struck out seven in 5.1 innings and gave up five earned runs on seven hits.
The Warrior offense proved its strength once again with a total of 15 hits on the day. Of Stanislaus' 18 runs scored, 11 were earned runs.
Fred Atkins was 2-for-5 with a double and a homerun, scoring twice in the first five innings. Atkins also drove in four RBI's.
Thomas Shull also had a great day at the plate, going 2-for-4, with two walks.
Academy of Art took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first after Jonathan Robbins singled off of Wallace. Ryan Worley, with a sacrifice bunt, allowed Robbins to reach scoring position. After a single to the left field by Zach Babitt, Robbins was able to reach home and put the Urban Knights on the board.
The Warriors answered back in the first after a Atkins doubled to led off to begin the Warriors hitting streak. Shull helped advance Atkins to third by placing a bunt deep between Academy of Arts pitcher and first baseman. The Warriors were on the board after designated hitter
Michael Johnson hit a sacrifice fly to the center fielder, allowing Atkins to score.
David Contreras was up next, reaching by error by the Urban Knights pitcher. Shull and Contreras would eventually touch home plate, giving the Warriors the lead.
In the third inning AAU fought back again and tied up the game after a single by Wade Broadstreet. Lead off hitter, Jonathan Robbins then took four balls, drawing a walk. After a double steal by both runners, AAU was in scoring position once again. Darnell Quinney drove both runners in after a single up the middle.
After the Warriors answered back and took a 5-3 lead, AAU was unable to come within five runs the rest of the game.
The seventh inning was security for Stanislaus as they scored seven more runs, taking an 18-5 run over Academy of Art.
Some of the days biggest offensive contributors were Johnson who was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.
Casey Filkins, 2-for-5 with three runs and an RBI, and
Kory Vitato with two runs on two hits.
