TURLOCK – The Cal State Stanislaus baseball team wrapped up a four-game series against Academy of Art with an 8-4 win Sunday afternoon.
Wrapping up a five-game homestand of preseason play, Stanislaus will enter the first weekend of CCAA play with a winning record of 6-0.
Leonard Giammanco, scheduled to play only three innings, was the starter and winning pitcher in game four. In 3.0 innings pitched he only allowed three hits and struck out two urban knight batters. Giammanco exited the game with a Warrior lead of six runs over Academy of Art.
The top of the fourth and top of the fifth the Urban Knights took advantage of some off pitching by the Warriors. Academy of Art scored a run in the fourth, but in the top of the fifth Warrior reliever,
Keith McDaniels, gave up three earned runs bringing the score to a two-run game.
In the Bottom of the fifth Cal State Stanislaus answered back with two more runs on the board, which gave them an 8-4 lead that they were able to hold to with strong pitching by Phillip Quade and
Michael Johnson. Quade gave up only one hit and struck out three in 3.0 innings. Johnson closed out the final two innings with no Urban Knights hits and four strikeouts.
Offense by the Warriors was not as dominant as the previous games in the series, but there were a few players that shined at the plate in game four. John Canapa was 2-for-2 with one run, two RBI's, and a walk.
Thomas Shull was 1-for-3 with two runs, an RBI, and he drew two walks at the plate.
Colton Beatty was 2-4 on the day.
Cal State Stanislaus will be playing a four game series against Cal State San Bernardino on the road next week. Game one will be Friday at 2 p.m.
