SAN BERNARDINO — After spending most of the weekend waiting for the rain to stop and the fields to dry, the Cal State Stanislaus Warriors finally got to play two games on Monday to start the conference season. In the end, the Warriors will come home with a split against Cal State San Bernardino.

CSUSB and Aaron Brooks won the battle of pitching aces in game one with a 3-1 decision. Then, Stanislaus won the offensive battle in the nightcap, 9-6, in eight innings before it got too dark to continue.

The Warriors, who traveled to the San Bernardino area on Friday, are now on the long trek home after improving to 7-1 overall and 1-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. As of today, the Warriors are ranked No. 5 in the latest NCBWA West Region poll.

The series, originally scheduled for a four-game set starting on Friday, could never get underway throughout the weekend. CSUSB moved the games to College of the Desert on Saturday, but rain and field conditions canceled play. Sunday's twinbill was then shifted back to Fiscalini Field in San Bernardino, however, poor field conditions prevented the teams from any action again.

Fiscalini Field, former home of the San Bernardino Spirit, currently does not have a tarp to cover the infield. CSU San Bernardino does not have an on-campus baseball facility.

The teams finally got on the field today at Fiscalini for an 11:30 a.m. first pitch for the battle of the two aces. Warrior starter Andrew Stueve and Brooks matched zeros for the first seven innings. Brooks, however, also struck out two in a 3-up, 3-down eighth against Stanislaus.

In the bottom of the eighth, Cal State San Bernardino scored three runs on four hits, including a two run single by Brandon Day and a double by Virgil Chavira, to chase Stueve. CSUS got one run back in the ninth before Stueve was tagged with the loss. He went seven innings and allowed two runs on seven hits with four strikeouts.

Brooks finished with eight shutout innings, allowed five hits and struckout nine against no walks for the victory.

In the nightcap, Stanislaus leadoff man Fred Atkins got things going early. He scored a run in the first and drove in two runs in the second with a double to help the Warriors run up to a 4-0 lead. Stanislaus would add three more unearned runs in the fourth, highlighted by a Thomas Shull two-run double for a 7-3 lead and eventually the win.

Atkins finished the nightcap 3-for-4 with a double and three runs batted in. Shull had two hits and drove in two runs and David Contreras also had two RBI. Casey Filkins and John Canepa each collected two hits to lead Stanislaus.

Warrior starter Vinny Pacchetti gave up four runs on seven hits in four innings of work before giving way to Phil Quade. Pacchetti did out-duel CSUSB starter Casey McCarthy, who gave up seven runs on six hits in 3 2/3 innings.

David Silvas went 3-for-5 with a double and Matt Winn had two doubles and drove in two scores to lead the Coyotes (3-5, 1-1 CCAA).

Per CCAA bylaw, the teams are not required to make-up the two canceled games since CSUS and CSUSB are from opposite regions of the state.
