TURLOCK — Missed opportunities caused the Warriors in one game and in the other they never really had a chance as Cal Poly Pomona won both baseball games on Saturday.
Cal State Stanislaus' rally came up short in the opener as the Warriors fell, 4-3. Then, in the nightcap, Cal Poly Pomona scattered 14 hits and used four Stanislaus errors to hand CSUS a 13-1 loss.
After dropping the first three games of this series, the Warriors are now 13-6 overall and 7-6 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
The streaking Broncos, winners of five straight, improved to 15-6 overall and 9-6 in the CCAA.
Cal State Stanislaus will have to try and avoid the series sweep in the finale on Sunday with
Vinny Pacchetti scheduled to start on the mound. First pitch is at noon.
In Saturday's game one, the Warriors had an early 1-0 lead but Cal Poly Pomona scored four unanswered runs. The CPP scoring started with a solo homer by Travis Taijeron, his second in the series, in the fourth inning.
Jenzen Torres drove in two runs in the sixth and Tyson Edwards scored on a sac fly in the seventh to make it 4-1.
The Warriors responded with a rally in the seventh.
Colton Beatty scored on a single by
Ross Gonsalves and with two outs,
David Contreras was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Joe Medeiros, the team's leading hitter by batting average, was called to pinch hit. CPP reliever Michael Parker, however, got Medeiros to strike out looking on a curve ball inside to end the Stanislaus rally.
With the score at 4-2, Stanislaus threatens again in its final at-bat in the bottom of the ninth. After the first two batters reached base, Gonsalves wasn't able to advance the runners with a bunt as Pomona got the lead runner. Contreras then singled to center to plate
Kory Vitato. With runners at the corners and one out, Medeiros was asked to put down a squeeze play, but instead he popped up to the pitcher for out number two.
After Contreras stole second as the game's winning-run in scoring position,
Fred Atkins struck out looking on another inside pitch to end the game.
Cal State Stanislaus also left runners at second and third in the second inning on a called third strike. In all, the Warriors left nine runners on base with seven of them in scoring position.
