TURLOCK — Cal State Stanislaus pitchers gave up just four hits in Monday's doubleheader as the Warriors swept visiting Cal State Monterey Bay, 6-0 and 2-1, to win the series.

Vinny Pacchetti tossed a complete game one-hit shutout in game one. Then, three Warrior pitchers gave up three hits in the seven-inning nightcap to help the Warriors improve to 17-9 overall and 11-9 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

Game two starter Chris Short also gave up just one hit in his six-inning outing, giving the Warriors three stellar performances by the starting pitchers in the series.

Cal State Monterey Bay fell to 12-16 overall and 9-10 in the CCAA. The Warriors improved their series record over CSUMB to 22-2 and have won 15 of the teams' last 16 meetings.

Pacchetti's gem came just before Monday's announcement from the conference office awarding Warrior ace Andrew Stueve as pitcher of the week for his performance on Sunday in Seaside.

Pacchetti followed Stueve's effort on Monday with his own complete game. However, he may have out-done Stueve with the one hit shutout. Pacchetti gave up a single to left to Tony Hernandez, the second batter in the game. A walk and a double play grounder ended the Monterey Bay first.

From that point on, other than three walks and a hit batsman, Pacchetti did not allow any other Otters to reach base. After two free passes (he hit and walked a batter) with one out in the fourth, Pacchetti retired the final 17 batters in order for the masterpiece. In the end, the senior from Novato struck out seven and walked four. It was his first career complete game shutout.

Offensively in game one, the Warriors picked up three runs in the second inning on a double by Atkins that scored Michael Johnson. David Contreras then doubled to left-center to score two more runs. Stanislaus would score three more unearned runs off CSUMB, including two runs in the eighth, to put the game away.

Contreras, who was 3-for-his previous 30 at bats, came out of the slump and went 2-for-3, stole a base, drove in two runs and scored twice to lead the Warriors. Atkins also finished with two hits and stole two bags.

Short provided the encore on the mound for Stanislaus in game two as he too had a strong outing. While the offense stalled in the middle innings hitting into three double plays in three consecutive innings, Short took a no-hitter into the fifth until Tyler Young singled to center with one out.

Short did get into a little bit of trouble in the third by allowing a leadoff walk to Ron Duer. Duer advanced to second on a grounder, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a groundout to make it 2-1.

Cal State Stanislaus had jumped out on top with two runs in the first inning. Johnson drove in both scores with an one out single to left that plated Zach Cadet and Atkins. Johnson finished with two of the Warriors' three hits.

Cal State Monterey Bay would threaten in the seventh inning with its first two runners reaching base off reliever Phil Quade. An Otter baserunning mistake allowed the Warriors to get the first out, then a strikeout and a hit-batter made it runners at first and second with two outs.

With Leonard Giammanco on the mound to get the final out, CSUMB pinch hitter Hernandez sharply hit safely to left. With the lead runner Alex Mangubat trying to score, CSUS left fielder Atkins threw a bullet to catcher DJ Arellano to gun down the tying run to end the game.
