TURLOCK —
Fred Atkins' double to left drove in two scores as the Cal State Stanislaus baseball team beat Cal State Dominguez Hills, 3-2, in the nightcap to earn a split on Saturday in dramatic fashion.
After being stifled by Toro starter Josh Corrales in game one, the 26th ranked Warriors rebounded to get a second walkoff win in the series. Cal State Stanislaus improved to 12-3 overall and 6-3 in California Collegiate Athletic Association action.
Cal State Dominguez Hills' pitching was strong on Saturday as the Toros blanked the Warriors, 5-0, in game one before ending the day 6-12 overall and 2-9 during CCAA play.
The series finale is on Sunday with a new first pitch time at 10 a.m.
With CSUDH leading 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh in a scheduled seven-inning game, the Warriors rallied in their final at-bat after a long day of frustrations offensively.
Zach Cadet drew a walk to finally chase Toro starter David Fair to led off the inning. Pinch hitter
John Canepa then successfully moved Cadet over on a bunt off reliever Derrick Dingeman. Stanislaus second baseman, and the ninth place hitter in the lineup,
Colton Beatty hit a pop-up in the infield that fell between the pitcher and the Toros' second baseman to set up first and second, one out situation.
Atkins, the following Warrior batter, took a 1-0 pitch deep to left past CSUDH left fielder to easily score Cadet. Racing all the way from first, Beatty narrowly slid under the tag at home plate for the game-winner.
These two runs came after a day where Dominguez Hills pitchers kept the Stanislaus bats quiet. The Warriors managed to score one run in the first inning of the nightcap after being shutout in the opener. Prior to the dramatic seventh inning, CSUS had scored two runs in 28 innings in the series.
Against Fair in game two, the Warriors had a great chance in the third inning. With runners at second and third and one out, Fair, however got two grounder to end the inning.
Atkins finished with two of the team's five hits in that game. He also stole a base.
Casey Filkins also had a double.
Phil Quade tossed two one-hit innings in relief of
Chris Short to pick up the win on the mound. Quade is now 2-0. Short went five innings and gave up two runs on five hits. He struck out five and walked one.
In game one, Corrales gave up just four hits in the complete game shutout. The Toro junior struck out 10 without a walk. He did, however, hit
David Contreras three times.
Corrales' gem dealt CSUS starter
Kory Wallace his first loss of the year. Wallace gave up five runs on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings of work. The Stanislaus bullpen, however, kept opponents off the scoreboard again.
Drew Rodela went 1-for-3 with a two-run homer to right for CSUDH in the sixth inning. Leyva and Kyle Pond each had two hits.
