Game 2
TURLOCK — Utilizing their final opportunities at the plate, the Warriors won two one-run games against Simpson University on a long Saturday afternoon at Warrior Baseball Field.
Cal State Stanislaus rallied to tie in the ninth and won it in the 10th of the opener, 7-6. Then took the nightcap, 4-3, after tying in the eighth and finished off the Red Hawks in the ninth.
The doubleheader sweep, which lasted 19 innings and nearly six-and-a-half hours, propelled the Warriors to 20-17 overall. Cal State Stanislaus also snapped an eight-game skid while extending its win-streak over Simpson to eight games.
With two more one-run games, the Warriors improved to 8-7 on the year in games decided by one run.
Vince Hungerford homered twice on the day — a solo shot in both games — to lead the Warriors offensively. His second homerun came in the bottom of the eighth that tied the game at 3-3 after Simpson took the lead just minutes earlier. He also ledoff the second inning of game one with a solo shot to left.
The Warriors took a 4-1 lead into the top of the seventh of the opener, but the Red Hawks got to CSUS starter
Andrew Stueve by putting up a five-spot to take a 6-4 lead. Stueve, who had 10 strikeouts in six-plus innings, ended up with the no decision.
Simpson's closer Adrian DeMar fanned the first two batters he faced in the home half of the ninth, but
Boomer Donnell started a rally by reaching base when he was hit by a pitch.
Colton Beatty then singled to right to move pinch runner
Cisco Green to third. After Beattty took second,
Zach Cadet drove an 1-1 pitch to the right-center field wall for a triple to score both runners to tie the game.
In the 10th, Hungerford drew a leadoff walk and eventually scored on singles by
Kory Vitato and
Michael Johnson.
Leonard Giammanco picked up the win as he gave up just one hit and struck out two in three inings of work.
In the nightcap, Warrior starter
Vinny Pacchetti also had 10 strikeouts but was locked in a close game before leaving with a 2-1 lead through six innings. Pacchetti gave up just one unearned run on four hits.
The Red Hawks again rallied from behind to take a 3-2 lead in the eighth, but Hungerford answered with a leadoff bomb to left into the Warrior bullpen to even the score.
Again in their final at-bats, the Warriors manufactured a run for the victory. Green started with a single to right that was followed by a
David Contreras bunt single. A baserunning miscue resulted in a fly-out doubleplay to set-up a two-out, runner at second situation.
Simpson intentionally walked Cadet, who was 3-for-8 with a double and a triple on the day, to face
Joe Medeiros. Medeiros smashed a 1-0 pitch to left-center for the dramatic walkoff win.
Keith McDaniels was the winning pitcher as he tossed the final 1 2/3 innings for Stanislaus.
Beatty was 3-for-10 in the twinbill and extended his hit-streak to seven games. Contreras went 3-for-5 in the opener and had a double and scored twice in the nightcap.
Simpson, a NAIA program from Redding, falls to 13-25 on the season. Joshua Corson was 4-for-10 with two doubles and drove in three runs in the doubleheader for the Red Hawks.
Cal State Stanislaus resume to California Collegiate Athletic Association action next weekend when it hosts Cal State L.A. for a four-game set. Friday's series opener is at 3 p.m.
