Beatty's bomb lifts Warriors in game one before Chico earns split

CHICO — Colton Beatty's two-run home run in the top of the ninth inning capped a dramatic game as the Warriors beat No. 27 Chico State, 6-4, in game one on Tuesday.

Chico State, however, rebounded in the nightcap 12-6. The Wildcats used three home runs with a six-run third inning to earn the doubleheader split.

The split meant Cal State Stanislaus is now 24-19 overall and 16-18 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association heading into the final weekend of regular season play. Chico State snapped a six-game skid to improve to 28-15, 22-14 CCAA.

In the opener, Chico State tied the game in the bottom of the eighth on its second homer of the day, but John Canepa singled in to start the Stanislaus ninth. With two outs, Beatty, who had two hits earlier, belted his second homer of the year for the go-ahead scores.

Andrew Stueve, who came in in relief in the fifth inning on three-days rest, shut down Chico State in the ninth in order to preserve the win. Stueve tossed 4 2/3 innings and gave up just one hit -- the Adrian Brings solo shot -- to improve to 5-2 on the year.

Beatty finished 3-for-5 with a double and homer and Garrett Wright, making his first start of the year and had just one hit prior to today, drove in two scores. Wright drove in a run in the third on a squeeze bunt and drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth.

In the nightcap, Chico State scored twice in the first and after the Warriors tied it with two runs of their own in the top of the second, the Wildcats went ahead 3-2 and used a six-run third to make it 9-2 en route to the win.

Joe Medeiros hit a two-run homer in the second for the Warriors as the junior catcher went 2-for-4 in the game. Wright had two more hits on th day and Thomas Shull also went 2-for-4. The top five hitters in the lineup, however, went just 3-for-20.

Bringas, Ian McKay and Ben Manlove all homered for Chico State.

Stanislaus starter Michael Johnson suffered the loss. He worked two innings and gave up four runs on six hits before turning it over to the bullpen. Chris Short, Sunday's starter, pitched the final 4 2/3 innings and gave up just one hit.
