Box Score LOS ANGELES —
Chase Wheatcroft entered the game in the ninth in a huge jam. However, after a bumpy start, the Warrior closer got the three outs he needed to preserve the victory as Stanislaus State beat Cal State L.A., 6-4, Friday night.
Joe Ryan turned in another quality start and the Warriors scattered 11 hits, including a homer by
Jack Large, as they improved to 3-1 after the non-conference tilt. It was Cal State L.A.'s season opener.
Large went 2-for-5 with a solo blast in the first inning and drove in two runs and
Brandon De La Guardia was 3-for-4 with a double and drove in three scores to lead the Stan State offense. The Warriors had five extra base hits with four doubles. The eighth and ninth batters — De La Guardia and
Vincenzo Margiotta — went 5-for-8 with two doubles, drove in four runs and scored twice.
Wheatcroft inherited the bases loaded jam with nobody out in the ninth inning with the score 6-1. After walking the first batter he faced, he fanned clean-up hitter Jorge Garcia for the first out. Jordan Peabody then singled in two runs to make it 6-4 before Wheatcroft got a fly out and a come-backer to the mound to end the game.
The Warriors scored three runs in the top of the fourth on back to back doubles by De La Guardia and Margiotta to make it 4-0. De La Guardia then singled in
John Holleran in the sixth to make it 5-0.
Ryan went six strong shutout innings and allowed five hits. He struck out six and walked two to improve to 2-0.
Cody Kruip pitched a clean seventh, gave up a run in the eighth on two straight doubles, but got into the jam in the ninth.
The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, starting at 11 a.m., to conclude the three-game set.
