Warriors Return to the Diamond for Four-Game Series at Sonoma State, March 28-30

TURLOCK, Calif.--- After capturing its first conference series win this weekend, Stan State will return to the road for a four-game series in Rohnert Park, Calif., against the Sonoma State Seawolves.  The series will begin with a 2:00 p.m. starting game this Thursday, March 28 at Seawolf Diamond in Rohnert Park. The two teams will play an 11:00 a.m. starting doubleheader this Friday, March 29.  The two teams will conclude the series with an 11:00 a.m. this Saturday, March 30.

LAST WEEK:  The Warriors took three out of four games from Cal State East Bay.  Stan State took the first game 15-2 on Friday.  The Warriors split the doubleheader falling 5-2 but taking the night cap 3-1. They won the series finale 11-10 in eleven innings.  Stan State batted .329 and had a 3.75 earned run average.  Six players hit .330 or higher in Chris Catalano (.412), Mac Cabero (.400), Danny Murphy (.375), Robert Valdivia (.333), Alex Solis (.333), and Kyle Rachels (.333).  The Warriors hit five home runs with one each by Danny Murphy, Robert Valdivia, Kyle Rachels, Flavio Perez, and Luke Davies.  Perez had a team leading three doubles while Cooper Winton stole a team leading three stolen bases.
Austin Balentine, Caleb Bertoncini, and Quinn Oliver reach recording a win while Noah Chelberg recorded the save.  Tony Jacob struck out nine batters and Bertoncini eight batters.

STAN STATE IN REVIEW: After taking three out of four from Cal State East Bay, the Warriors are 11-15-1 overall and 7-11 in the CCAA.  They are tied for seventh with Cal State San Bernardino, just percentage points out of sixth place (Cal State Los Angeles).  The top six teams at the end of the regular season will receive a berth to the CCAA Baseball Championship.  Cal State San Marcos is first followed by Cal State Monterey Bay and San Francisco State. The next two are Chico State and Cal Poly Pomona followed by Cal State Los Angeles.

WARRIOR HITTERS:  Stan State is hitting .298 as a team with seven players hitting .275 or higher in Ryan Leonesio (.526), Chris Catalano (.423), Alex Solis (.371), Robert Valdivia (.313), Kyle Rachels (.296), Tyler Van Dyk (.293), and JD Madrigal (.289).  Leonesio has a team leading .684 slugging percentage and Catalano leads the team with his .487 on-base percentage.  Rachels has driven in a team leading 18 runs while Catalano has scored a team high 22 runs.  Solis leads the team with his 11 doubles while Rachels has hit a team high four home runs.  Rachels also leads the team with his two triples.  Cooper Winton, Catalano, and Valdivia each have stolen a team leading four stolen bases.

WARRIOR PITCHERS:  Stan State has a team earned run average of 6.99.  Caleb Bertoncini lead the way with a team low earned run average of 1.99.  Austin Balentine has a team best 4-1 record and has recorded a team leading two saves.  Tony Jacob leads Stan State with his 31 strikeouts. 

NINE AWAY:  Stan State head coach Kenny Leonesio is nine victories away from 500.  Heading into this weekend, Coach Leonesio is 491-535-3. 

BERTONCINI/CATALANO/SOLIS: The trio of Austin Balentine, Chris Catalano, and Alex Solis are in the top ten in the CCAA in six categories.  Catalano is second in hits (44), third in batting average (.423), and sixth in on-base percentage (.487).  Balentine is tied for third in wins (four), and tied for seventh in saves (two).  Solis is second with his 12 doubles.  In the recent NCAA DII statistics report, Solis is 15th in doubles and Catalano is 30th in hits per game (1.63).

SONOMA STATE:  The Seawolves are 12-13 overall and 6-9 in the CCAA after taking two of three road games from San Francisco State this Sunday and Monday.  Sonoma lost the opener 9-2, but won the next two 9-8 and 22-9.  SF State is leading 9-6 in the top of the sixth inning in a halted game due to darkness. Sonoma State has a .269 batting average.  They have three hitters hitting over .300 in Kenny Decelle (.393), Garret Barto (.356), and Daniel Monti (.328).  Mark Hernandez and Christopher Wright each have hit a team leading five home runs while Wright leads the team with his 22 runs batted in.  Decelle has stolen a team high nine stolen bases and is tied with Hernandez each scoring a team leading 20 runs.  He is also leading Sonoma with his eight doubles and four triples. The Seawolves has a 7.49 earned run average  Nik Kamages has a team leading three victories and Tanner Fonoti has struck out a team leading 30 batters.

ALL-TIME SERIES:  Since 2008, Sonoma State leads the all-time series 48-20 including winning seven of the last ten meetings.  The Seawolves swept the series last season in Turlock 5-2, 4-1, 8-0, and 4-1.  In game one, Flavio Perez and Mac Cabero each had two hits.  The Warriors lost game two 4-1 as Perez and Cabero each had two hits again in the second game.  Alex Solis had two hits in the third game for the Warriors, an 8-0 loss.  In the series finale 4-1 loss, Alexander Cummings drove in Stan State's run.  The Warriors' last victory over Sonoma State was a 3-1 victory in Rohnert Park, April 9.  Tyler Van Dyk was one-for-four, which was a double, and a run batted in while Ryan Leonesio was one-for-three with a run scored.

UP NEXT:  Stan State will travel to Stockton, Calif., for a 6:30 p.m. exhibition game with the Oakland Athletics' Single A Affiliate, Stockton Ports on Wednesday, April 3.  The Warriors will return home, April 5-6 when they host Cal Poly Pomona in a four-game series.  The series will begin with a 6:00 p.m. single game on Student Affairs Night against the Broncos on Friday, April 5.  The two teams will play a 1:00 p.m. starting doubleheader on Saturday, April 6.  Prior to the game at 12:45 p.m., the two teams will rename the press box at Warrior Field, the Dave Gomes Pressbox.  The series will conclude with a noon starting single game on Sunday, April 7.
