Baseball to Host Chico State this Weekend, March 8-10

Baseball Returns to the Diamond to Host Chico State in Four-Game CCAA Series

TURLOCK, Calif.---  Stan State (7-7-1, 3-3 CCAA) will look to extends it three-game winning streak this weekend when the Warriors host Chico State in a four-game series at Warrior Field.  The two teams will play the series opener this Friday, March 8 under the lights with first pitch scheduled for 6:00 p.m.  The series will continue with a 1:00 p.m. starting doubleheader on Saturday, March 9.  The series finale is set for noon on Sunday, March 10.
 
LAST WEEK:  The Warriors swept a doubleheader in a rain shortened series at Cal State San Bernardino 13-11 and 6-2.  Kody Cardoza was one of five Warriors to pitch in the Stan State 13-11 series opening victory over the Coyotes.  He pitched 2.2 scoreless innings of relief, giving up three hits, walking one, and striking out two.  Alex Solis went four-for-five with five runs batted in including a solo home run.  Kyle Rachels added a two-run home run for the victors.
 
Tony Jacob pitched a three-hit complete game in the 6-2 victory.  He gave up two unearned runs and struck out seven while walking four.  Chris Catalano hit a three-run home run and added a two-run double with Jackson Brooks hitting a solo home run for Stan State. 
 
STAN STATE HITTERS:  The Warriors are hitting .284 as a team with six hitting .300 or higher in Ryan Leonesio (.500), Alex Solis (.436), Chris Catalano (.339), Robert Valdivia (.333), Tyler Van Dyk (.318), and Jonluke Goldman (.300).  Solis leads the team with hits 24 hits, eight doubles, and 35 doubles.  Kyle Rachels has driven in a team leading 13 runs. He has hit three of the Warriors' 13 home runs.  Jacob Baker has two and eight Warriors have one home run each in Solis, Catalano, Valdivia, Leonesio, Flavio Perez, Jerry Nix, Danny Murphy, and Jackson Brooks.  Valdivia leads the team with his 12 runs scored.  Leonesio has posted a team high .667 slugging and .526 on-base percentages.  Perez has stolen a team leading two bases.  The Warriors as a team have ten stolen bases.
 
WARRIOR PITCHERS:  Stan State has a 5.91 earned run average with four pitchers (with at least six innings pitched) with a 3.00 or lower earned run average in Caleb Bertoncini (1.86), JoJo Keldsen (2.00), Kody Cardoza (2.84), and Patrick Sweeney (2.84).  Kody Cardoza, Will Crookham, and Austin Balentine each have recorded two wins while Balentine has both of the Warriors' saves.  Tony Jacob has struck out a team leading 21 batters.  Bertoninci has struck out 10 batters and walked four and Balentine has 10 strikeouts with five walks.  Crookham has 11 strikeouts and five walks.
 
CCAA PITCHER OF THE WEEK:  Tony Jacob was named the CCAA Baseball Pitcher of the Week for his performance in the Warriors' 6-2 game two victory at CSUSB on Friday night.  He struck out seven and walked four in seven innings.  Jacob gave up three hits and two unearned runs.
 
12 AND COUNTING:  Chris Catalano has reached base safely in his last 12 games.  Alex Solis has a seven-game hitting streak and Ryan Leonesio has a six-game hitting streak.
 
UP TO SEVEN:  Robert Valdivia and Alex Solis each have seven multiple-hit games with Solis have one four-hit game.  Kyle Rachels has four multi-RBI games.  Chris Catalano and Solis each have a one five-RBI game.  
 
CHICO STATE:  The Wildcats enter the weekend with an 8-5 overall record and a 3-5 CCAA record after losing three out of four home games to San Francisco State last week.  They are hitting .287 as a team with a 5.30 earned run average.  Three hitters are hitting over .300 in Kaden Bass (.389), Troy Kent (.370), and Thade Miller (.316).  Kent has driven in a team leading 12 runs and scored a team high 11 runs.  He also leads the team with his five doubles.  Miller and Daniel Vierra each lead Chico with three stolen bases.  Three Wildcats have a home run in Kent, Vierra, and Michael Baker. 
 
Their pitching staff ls led by Kevin Lyons' 2.42 earned run average and his 20 strikeouts.  Lyons along with Ethan Lay, and Marco Ibarra each have recorded two wins.  Chico State has two saves one each by Jeremy Keller and Scott Lewis.
 
LAST SEASON:  Chico State leads the all-time series with Stan State 45-21 including winning seven of the last ten meetings.  The two teams split the series last year in Chico, March 3-5, 2023.  Stan State won the first meeting 5-4 with Austin Balentine picking up the win.  Alex Solis was three-for-five with two runs batted in while Tyler Van Dyk, Robert Valdivia, Flavio Perez, and Jacob Baker each had two hits. 
 
In game two, Stan State defeated the Wildcats 11-5 behind 12 hits including four doubles (one each by Van Dyk, Baker, Alex Solis, and JD Madrigal).  Solis drove in three runs and scored three times while Baker drove in two runs.  Chico State took the third game 7-1 despite Will Crookham, Damian Vallejos, and LaKeal Morris combing for 6.2 scoreless innings of relief, giving up three hits, walking two, and striking out six.
 
Chico State used a five-run seventh to key its 6-4 come-from-behind victory over the Warriors in the series finale.  Stan State hit two solo home runs by Van Dyk and Robert Valdivia. Alexander Cummings had two of the Warriors' seven hits.  Tony Jacob pitched four innings, giving up one run and striking out five.

EXHIBITION GAME:  For the second consecutive season, Stan State will face the Oakland A's Single-A Affiliate Stockton Ports in an exhibition game on Wednesday, April 3 with a 6:30 p.m. scheduled first-pitch at Banner Island Ballpark in Stockton, Calif.  Tickets for the exhibition matchup will be released at a later time on the Stockton Ports' website.  Gates will open at 5:30 p.m. If you cannot attend to cheer the Warriors on against the Ports, you can hear Bryan Nelson call the game on www.bluechipbroadcasting.com.
 
UP NEXT:  The Warriors will return to the road for a four-game series in Seaside, Calif., with No. 23 Cal State Monterey Bay, March 15-17.  Stan State will return home March 22-24 for a four-game series with Cal State East Bay.
