Warriors to Face Ports and Host Broncos

TURLOCK, Calif.---  Stan State returns to the Valley this week for an exhibition game and four California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) games this week.  The Warriors will travel to Stockton, Calif., for an exhibition game this Wednesday, April 3 at 6:30 p.m. against the Oakland Athletics' Single an Affiliate Stockton Ports at Banner Island Ballpark.  Stan State will host Cal Poly Pomona this Friday-Sunday, April 5-7 at Warrior Field.  The series will begin with a 6:00 p.m. starting game on Student Affairs Night at Warrior Field.  The two teams will continue the series with a 1:00 p.m. starting doubleheader on Dave Gomes Press Box Dedication Day.  The series will conclude with a noon starting series finale on Sunday.

WARRIORS:  After splitting its four-game series at Sonoma State, Stan State is 13-17-1 overall and 9-13 in the CCAA.  The Warriors are batting .293 and a team earned run average of 6.65.  They are just percentage points out of sixth place.  The top six teams at the end of the regular season will receive berth in the CCAA Baseball Championships at Cal Poly Pomona, May 8-11, with the winner earning the CCAA automatic berth to the CCAA's.  Stan State has 16 games left in the regular season eight at home:  Cal Poly Pomona (April 5-7) and Cal State San Marcos (April 26-28) and eight on the road San Francisco State (April 12-14) and Cal State Los Angeles (May 2-4). STAN STATE HITTERS:  Six Warriors are hitting .275 or higher in Ryan Leonesio (.419), Chris Catalano (.378), Alex Solis (.352), Robert Valdivia (.313), Kyle Rachels (.295), and Tyler Van Dyk (.290).  Kyle Rachels has driven in a team leading 21 runs while Catalano has scored a team high 22 runs.  Catalano leads the team with his 45 hits and five stolen bases while Solis has a team high 11 doubles.  Rachels leads Stan State with his six home runs and two triples.

WARRIOR PITCHERS:  Austin Balentine leads the Stan State pitchers with his 4-2 record and two saves. Tony Jacob has struck out a team high 37 batter Noah Chelberg has appeared in a team leading 13 games and Jacob has pitched in a team high 36 innings.  Caleb Bertoncini has a team low 2.45 earned run average.

LAST WEEK: The Warriors split their four-game series at Sonoma State in a pair of doubleheaders 5-2 loss, 13-3 victory, 7-4 victory, and 4-2 loss.  Stan State had a .260 batting average and a 4.22 earned run average.  Four Warriors hit over .300 during the series in Jerry Nix (.667), Jacob Baker (.500), Danny Murphy (.333), and Robert Valdivia (.313). Three Stan State players hit two home runs each in Jacob Baker, Kyle Rachels, and Alex Solis.  Baker drove in five runs and scored five runs.  Kody Cardoza and Tony Jacob each recorded victories.  Jacob struck out six batters while Cardoza struck out four. 

SEVEN AWAY: Kenny Leonesio is 493-537-3 in his 22-years as the head coach at Stanislaus State.  Leonesio has coached 57 All-CCAA players, 13 West Region Players, 3 All Americans, 2 CCAA and West Region Pitchers of the Year, and 9 Warriors have signed professional contracts with Major League teams. His 2008 team's 37 wins is the most in a season in the programs history.

CCAA LEADERS:  Stan State is in the top half of the CCAA in nine team statistical categories.  The Warriors are fourth in home runs (32) and sacrifice hits (14).  They are fifth in hits (304) and stolen bases (27-for-32).  Stan State is sixth in doubles (56), total bases (466), walks (120), strikeout/walks (196/52), and opponent batting average (.300). 
Chris Catalano is tied for fourth in the CCAA in sacrifice hits (three), tied for seventh (45), and ninth in batting average (.378).  Austin Balentine is tied for fifth in wins (four) and tied for eighth in saves (two).  Alex Solis is tied for second with his 11 doubles, Kyle Rachels is tied for sixth with his four sacrifice flies, and Tony Jacob's 37 strikeouts is ninth in the conference. 

14'S HAVE IT: Heading into this week, three Warriors have 14 multiple-hit games in Chris Catalano, Robert Valdivia, and Alex SolisKyle Rachels leads the team with his five multiple-RBI games.  Rachels is on a five-game hitting streak while both Solis and Valdivia saw their nine-game hitting streaks snapped this weekend at Sonoma State.  JD Madrigal is on a nine-game reached base safely streak and Rachels is on an eight-game one.  Catalano had his 16-game and Danny Murphy had his 13-game reached safely streaks snapped against the Seawolves.

STUDENT AFFAIRS NIGHT:  This Friday, it will be Student Affairs Night at Warrior Baseball Field.

DAVE GOMES PRESS BOX:  Prior to game one of Stan State's doubleheader with Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday, April 6, Stan State will name the Press Box at Warrior Field the Dave Gomes Press Box in recognition of Stan State Hall of Fame and "The Original Warrior" Dave Gomes.  The ceremony will take place at 12:45 p.m.

EXHIBITION GAME:  Stan State will travel to Stockton this Wednesday, April 3 for a 6:30 p.m. exhibition game with the Oakland Athletics' Single an Affiliate Stockton Ports at Banner Island Ballpark.  This is the second consecutive year that the Warriors and Ports have faced each other in an exhibition game.  For tickets, click here.

CAL POLY POMONA:  The Broncos took three out of four games from SF State this weekend in Pomona including winning the final two teams 3-2 and 8-3.  Cal Poly Pomona enters this weekend's series with the Warriors 15-13 overall and 11-9 in the CCAA.  The Broncos have a team batting average of .294 and a 5.24 earned run average.  Johnny Pappas leads the way with his .358 batting average and .508 on-base percentage.  He is tied with Anthony Gibbons for the team lead each with six home runs.  Gibbons has driven in a team leading 22 runs and scored a team high 29 runs.  He leads the Broncos with his ten doubles and is tied with Brent Cota each with three stolen bases.  Noel Soto leads Pomona with his 4-2 record and 32 strikeouts.  Rhys Stevens has a team low 3.73 earned run average.  Chris Fields has recorded three of the Broncos' five saves.

ALL-TIME SERIES:  Cal Poly Pomona leads the all-time series with the Warriors, 29-17, including winning six of the last ten meetings.  The Warriors took three out of the four games from Cal Poly Pomona in 2023 in Pomona.  Stan State lost game one 6-1, but came back and won game two 4-2.  Caleb Bertoncini pitched three innings for the save and Alex Solis was two-for-four with a run batted in, a double, and two runs scored.  The Warriors took game three, 6-1.  Damian Vallejos pitched five innings, giving up two hits and a run while striking out three.  Kyle Rachels and Mac Cabero each were two-for-four while Ryan Leonesio scored twice.  Stan State won the series finale, 6-1.  Cabero had three hits while Tyler Van Dyk and Robert Valdivia each had two hits.  Solis drove in two runs and Leonesio scored twice.  The Broncos defeated the Warriors 10-1 in the CCAA Baseball Championship Elimination Game in Seaside in 2023.  Solis drove in the Warriors' run on a solo home run.

UP NEXT:  Stan State will travel to San Francisco for a four-game series with San Francisco State, April 12-14.  The series will begin with a 2:00 p.m. single game on Friday, April 12.  It will continue with a noon starting doubleheader on Saturday, April 13.  The two teams will finish off the four-game series with a noon starting series finale Sunday, April 14.  The Warriors will return home for the final time this regular season, April 26-28 for a four-game series with Cal State San Marcos.
