No. 10 Warriors drop two at Best of the West Invite

2/1/2008 8:30:09 PM

TURLOCK — The Warriors opened defense of their West Region crown and tournament title Friday but signs of rust showed as No. 10 Cal State Stanislaus dropped a pair of games on opening day.

Seattle University and Cal State San Bernardin handed Stanislaus a pair of upset losses, 4-0 and 11-8 in nine innings, respectively, to start the Mizuno Best of the West Invitational at Pedretti Park in Turlock.

The Seattle Redhawks scored three times in the fifth to put the game away in a 4-0 win over the Warriors. Kelsey Reynolds tossed the complete game for Seattle. The Redhawks lost to CSUS 1-0 in last year's West Region championship game at Warrior Field.

Sandra Hernandez went 3-for-3 to lead SU offensively. Casey Stephenson was 2-for-3 to lead Stanislaus but key hits eluded the Warriors in their opener against the No. 18 Seattle University Redhawks.

"We should have hit better in the first game. I was pleased with our offense late in the second game," CSUS head coach Jan Schefkowitz said. "It's early and we are a little rusty not having been able to practice outside much in the last two weeks."

In the game against Cal State San Bernardino, the Coyotes got six early runs and led 7-1 after four innings. The Warriors also committed two errors in a two-run third inning. CSUSB chased starter Jennifer Arnold after two innings, but Warrior reliever Stacey Hains kept her team in the game.

Cal State Stanislaus staged a tremendous comeback in late innings, scoring three in the sixth and four in the seventh to take a brief 8-7 lead. Sarah Shamblin's double scored Breah Emery and Hains for the go-ahead run to complete the comeback.

The Coyotes, however, rallied to tie in the bottom of the seventh on a Ashley Collinwood pinch hit double that scored Tori Beaudette, who singled to start the inning. Beaudette finished with two hits and drove in three runs.

Arnold had three hits in the nightcap against CSUSB, including two doubles and drove in a run.

The Warriors will face Notre Dame de Namur at 12:15 p.m. when the tournament continues on Saturday. Stanislaus will also square off against CCAA rival UC San Diego at 2:30 p.m. UC San Diego went 2-0 on Friday.
