TURLOCK — The Cal State Stanislaus baseball team found itself trailing 9-1 in the ninth inning, but had the game's tying run at the plate with two outs before bowing out with a 9-5 opening day loss to Western Oregon on Tuesday.
The Wolves scored early and added on to their lead in the late innings before holding on for the victory. The single-game was Western Oregon's Central California stop after going 2-2 at UC San Diego. WOU will take on Chico State for four games beginning on Thursday to conclude their 9-game California trip.
Down 9-1 after WOU scored five times in the eighth and ninth innings, the Warriors bench responded in the final at-bat. After a

Dennis Wolfe started the rally with a triple to the base of the wall in center field to score Thelen. A fielder's choice eventually brought in Wolfe and with two on,
Kyle Loretelli drove in two runs with a double to left center to make it 9-5.
With two outs, both
Adam Fonville and
Chase Perez draw walks off WOU's fifth pitcher Ryan Smith to load the bases. Smith, however, got Thelen, the 10th batter in the inning, to ground out to second to end the game.
Jake Oketani, who came in to pinch hit in the eighth, went 2-for-2 with a pair of solid singles through the left side.
Tom Long also had two hits. The CSUS defense, however, committed five errors.
Warrior ace
Marquis Fleming pitched five strong innings and allowed two unearned runs on five hits. He gave up two runs in the third inning. The returning All-CCAA honorable mention selection fanned five and walked three.
Dylan Bruck led WOU with four hits and starter Greg Bobnick toss six shutout innings and allowed just two hits to get the win. Western Oregon, coming off a four-game series split at No. 15 UC San Diego, was picked to win the Great Northwest Athletic Conference for the eighth time.
Cal State Stanislaus will host Central Washington in a four-game series this weekend with doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday at 11 a.m.
