TURLOCK — After blanking Central Washington, 6-0, earlier on the day, the Cal State Stanislaus softball team dropped a thriller to Humboldt State, 5-4, in a semifinal game of the Tournament of Champions presented by Mizuno on Sunday.
The tournament is hosted by Cal State Stanislaus and held at Pedretti Park in Turlock.
Humboldt State defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills, 1-0, in the championship game to win the Tournament of Champions for the fourth straight year.
No. 20 Humboldt State, the top ranked team in the West Region, scored twice in the top of the seventh to answer Stanislaus's run in the sixth to win and advanced to the championship game against Cal State Dominguez Hills. CSUDH moved to the title game after getting a forfeit win over Seattle in the other semifinal game.
With the score tied at 3-3,
Sarah Shamblin gave the Warriors a 4-3 lead in the sixth with a double to left-center to score
Kimiko Wright. Wright beat out the rely throw and scored. Cal State Stanislaus got on board in the second inning with a two-run home run by
Alyssa Guzman.
HSU would answer with three runs in the third with four hits, including two doubles -- by Caitlin Klug and Natalie Galletly.
Cal State Stanislaus loaded the bases in the fourth and got a run when
Britney Borba was hit by a pitch to tie the score. The game remained 3-3 until the bottom of the sixth.
Starter
Jessica Gaumnitz gave up three runs on five hits in 2 1/3 innings of work. Jen Arnold tossed 4 2/3 strong innings before giving up two runs in the seventh.
Earlier on the day, the Warriors scored four times in the first inning to blank the Central Washington Wildcats. Borba and
Meghan Franksen hit back-to-back homers and
Jessica Scholl doubled in a run in the first inning rally.
Gaumnitz improved to 12-4 with a three-hitter in five innings. She struck out five before giving way to Arnold. Arnold toss the final two innings giving up just one hit.
Cal State Dominguez Hills and Seattle played to a 4-4 tie through seven but Seattle had to leave from Turlock to catch its flight in Sacramento, forfeiting the game to the Toros.
Humboldt State won the tournament with a 1-0 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills in the final game. Nikki Ketteringham belted a solo home run in the fourth inning, the Lumberjacks' first of two in the game.
Silver Bracket
UC San Diego won the silver bracket championship game on two San Francisco State errors in the bottom of the seventh as the Tritons defeated the Gators, 2-1.
Sisters Kelsey and Kendra Woods each homered for San Francisco State
UC San Diego defeated Western Oregon 2-0 after WOU advanced by blanking Sonoma State to move into the silver bracket championship game. San Francisco State defeated Dixie State to advance to the title tilt against UC San Diego. Dixie State had advanced after a 5-2 win over Cal State San Bernardino.
Bronze Bracket
Chico State won two games on Sunday, first with a 8-0 six-inning win over Chaminade and then with a 6-4 win over Saint Martin's to win the bronze bracket championship. The Wildcats were led by Chelsea Lundberg, who went 2-for-4 with a homer and drove in two runs. Megan Bera had three hits for Chico. Kristine Kaneshior went 2-for-4 with three RBIs for Saint Martin's.
Saint Martin's reached the bronze title game with a 3-2 win over Western Washington. Kristi Sigafoos went 2-for-3 and the Saints held-off the Vikings in the ninth for the victory.
