TURLOCK — The No. 22 Cal State Stanislaus Warriors had to play come-from-behind softball today and in the end split against the visiting San Francisco State Gators, winning game one 4-3 and lost game two 1-0.
Britney Borba tripled with one out in the seventh and later scored on a
Meghan Franksen sacrifice fly as the Warriors rallied from down 3-1 to win the opener. In the nightcap, the Warriors went 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position in game two and was not able to shake-off Kendra Wood's rise balls, in losing 1-0.
San Francisco State's lone run in game two was a controversial one, however. Franksen appeared to have taken the throw from
Kimiko Wright and gunned-down Karolyn Gubbine trying to score from second. Gubbine, however, was called safe as she slid around
Jessica Scholl's tag.
Cal State Stanislaus, now 24-18 overall and 17-9 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, was not able to bring runners home from second base. Four times in the game, the Warriors had the leadoff batter reach second and not score. Jen Arnold led off the home half of the seven with a double, but the Warriors went down in order against Wood.
Arnold pitched a brilliant game two, allowing just five hits and struck out three. She was out-done by Wood who tossed the four-hitter and fanned five Warriors.
In the opener, the Warriors took a 1-0 lead when
Alicia Reid scored on a
Sarah Shamblin single. San Francisco State scored three times in the fifth on five hits -- including back-to-back homers by Kelsey Wood and Lea Cardenas.
The Warriors would rally for two runs in the sixth. Franksen, who doubled in leadoff the inning, scored on a RBI single by Guzman. Guzman would later score on a Reid single to right to tie the score.
Arnold got the win in the first game after pitching the seventh inning in relief of
Jessica Gaumnitz. Gaumnitz allowed three runs on seven hits in six innings.
San Francisco State is now 25-17 and 11-11 in the CCAA. The same two teams will play another doubleheader on Saturday with a noon start.
