TURLOCK -- The Cal State Stanislaus bats went hot and cold all day Friday during a doubleheader split at Warrior Field against NAIA member Simpson University, and it showed in a 9-6 loss in game one and a 1-0 last at-bat victory in the nightcap.
With the split the Warriors improve to 28-16 overall. The Red Hawks fall to 11-31 on the season. Game one's win was Simpson's first victory of the season against an NCAA Division II opponent after going 0-5.
Cal State Stanislaus jumped out to a 3-1 lead after four innings in game one, thanks to a two-run first and an RBI single by
Adam Fonville in the fourth.
That was all the offense the Warriors would muster for the next four innings, while the Simpson bats came alive. The Red Hawks knocked out freshman starter
Andrew Stueve in the seventh inning. Simpson scored two runs in every inning from the six to the ninth to go up 9-3 heading into the bottom of the ninth.
The Warriors attempted a comeback in the last frame down by six runs.
Jake Oketani led off the inning getting hit by a pitch and moved to third on a
Kyle Loretelli double to left-center field. Pinch hitter
Leandro Dottavio hit an RBI single to right field, Loretelli scored on a wild pitch and Dottavio would come home on a dropped fly ball that would've been the final out, but the rally would be staved off by the Red Hawks, who held on for the 9-6 win.
Zach Gibbins led the Red Hawks offensively in game one, going 3-for-5 with a run scored. Kenny Button went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Simpson starting pitcher Blake Cull threw seven innings and allowed three runs while striking out eight for his third win of the season.
Game two was a pitcher's duel, as the Warriors' ace
Marquis Fleming took the mound against Simpson's leading ERA man Shane Hillier.
The scoreboard stayed blank all game, as both teams had trouble figuring out the opposing starter. Hillier scattered five hits and struck out four in seven innings of work. Fleming struck out 10 batters in eight innings while surrendering just two hits, two walks and no runs. Simpson was limited to four baserunners the entire game by Fleming.
The game would go to extra innings after staying knotted at 0-0 after the seventh. Kirk Marshlain replaced Hillier on the mound for the Red Hawks, and the Warriors took advantage.
A total of three walks, including two intentional, were issued to load the bases for the Warriors with two out in the bottom of the eighth. Catcher
Tom Long, who was key in last week's split with Cal State Dominguez Hills, hit a soft fly ball to shallow center field that Gibbins would not be able to reach, allowing the winning run in Oketani to score.
The Warriors and Simpson conclude their four-game series Saturday with a doubleheader scheduled for noon.
