TURLOCK — The No. 23 ranked Cal State Stanislaus softball team survived a scare and escaped with a doubleheader split against Cal State San Bernardino to clinch a CCAA tournament berth on Friday.

The Coyotes rallied to win game one, 3-2, but the resilient Warriors jumped on CSUSB in the afternoon affair before holding on for a 4-3 win to earn the split to improve to 26-20 overall and 19-11 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

The win meant the Warriors have secure either the No. 2 or No. 3 seed in the CCAA Softball Championship, set to start on May 1 in Arcata, hosted by Humboldt State.

The Warriors held on to win game two after opening up a 4-1 lead. Cal State San Bernardino scored twice in the seventh to cut the Warrior lead to 4-3 and had a runner on first without an out. Jessica Gaumnitz, who came in in relief, got CSUSB's No. 3 batter Ashley Collinwood to hit into a double-play, and got a pop-up to end the game to preserve the win.

Stanislaus jumped all over CSUSB starter Shisler in the second inning as the Warriors batted around to score four runs. The big play in the inning was a throwing error by the catcher trying to cut-down base runner Jessica Scholl at second with the throw ending up in deep centerfield. Scholl raced around the bases to score on the play to make it 3-1.

Later in the inning, Shamblin drove in Britney Borba to make it 4-1.

Warrior starter Jen Arnold was solid in the early goings of the game, allowing just one unearned run in the second inning before running into trouble in the seventh. She finished with seven hits on six innings of work and struck out four for the win to improve to 12-11.

The Warriors got on the board first in game one with two runs in the fourth. Casey Stephenson took the first pitch from Cassidy Lee and drilled it over the left field fence for a solo home run. Scholl, who had singled, scored the second run in the inning when Sarah Shamblin was hit by a pitch with the bases full.

Cal State San Bernardino answered back with three runs in a four-hit fifth inning highlighted by a Jordan Dahl double to left-center to score Debbie Shisler. CSUSB's Tawin Baker then came in and shut the down on the Warriors, allowing just two hits in the final three innings for the save.

Stephenson also had a double in the first game and went 2-for-4 to lead the Stanislaus offense.

The same two teams will wrap up the regular season on Saturday with the first game at 11 a.m., when the Warrior seniors will be recognized in a pregame ceremony.
