CARSON — After rallying for a game one win with
Jessica Gaumnitz holding off the Toros comeback, the Cal State Stanislaus softball team pounded out 12 hits in the nightcap to complete a pivotal four-game sweep over No. 24 Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday.
The Warriors scored three runs in the sixth and seventh innings and held off a CSUDH final-inning rally to win game one, 6-4. In the nightcap, a 12-hit attack and a solid pitching performance by Jenn Arnold, led to the series sweep with a 3-1 Stanislaus victory.
With the wins, Cal State Stanislaus improved to 23-17 overall and 16-8 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The defending West Region champion Warriors are now 18-4 in their last 22 games since starting the season 5-13. It was the Warriors' third CCAA four-game series sweep in their last four conference weekends.
More importantly, with Humboldt State splitting with Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday, the Warriors are now in first place in the conference by percentage points. Humboldt State dropped to 13-7 in CCAA play.
"I am very happy and very proud of the team to come down here and be ready to play," CSUS head coach Jan Schekowitz said. "It's all clicking right now. We continued to hit the ball very well and got some strong pitching. Jenn (Arnold) pitched very well today."
Cal State Dominguez Hills, the No. 24 ranked team in the latest NFCA Top 25, dropped to 21-20 overall and 10-12 in the CCAA.
Casey Stephenson and
Alyssa Guzman each had three hits in the 12-hit attack as the Warriors jumped out to a 3-0 lead through 2 1/2 innings.
Meghan Franksen and Stephenson each had a RBI hit in the first and
Sarah Shamblin drove in
Kimiko Wright in the second inning. Shamblin and Franksen each had two hits in game two.
That was plenty of run support for sophomore pitcher Arnold (9-10). While she was not dominating, the Ceres standout allowed just one run on five hits in seven innings of work. She fanned one and walked two batters.
In the opener, CSUDH took a 2-0 lead into the third but Stanislaus responded with two runs in the third — a Franksen two-run homer — to even the score. CSUS would add four runs in the final three innings for a 6-3 lead.
Britney Borba also homered for the Warriors.
Cal State Dominguez Hills threatens in the seventh inning with a leadoff home run by Jodi Nakawatase to make it 6-4. With one out, Liz Vazquez singled and another out later Kristin Tanaka doubled to left center to move the runners at second and third. Gaumnitz, however, got Jennifer Tellez to fly out to center to end the game.
Gaumnitz didn't dominate but did enough to limit the Toros as she improved to 14-4 on the season after allowing four runs on 10 hits and struck out one.
The sweep was the Warriors' third four-game road sweep of the season after taking all four games at Chico State, at Sonoma State and now at Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Warriors are now 14-2 on the road.
Cal State Stanislaus returns home and will finish off the regular season with back-to-back home series, beginning with San Francisco State next weekend at Warrior Softball Field.
