ARCATA—
Alyssa Guzman's three-run home run in the bottom of the 11th inning finally ended Saturday's California Collegiate Athletic Association Softball Championships finale, lifting Cal State Stanislaus to a 4-1 win over Cal State San Bernardino and the CCAA title.
Earning the CCAA's automatic berth, the Warriors advance into Wednesday's NCAA Division II West Region Championships with a 30-21 record. Cal State San Bernardino, now 34-30-1, will learn tomorrow if it has been awarded an at-large berth in the tournament, which will also be hosted by Humboldt State University.
In Saturday's championships game, neither team could break through against clutch pitching. Cal State Stanislaus'
Jessica Gaumnitz was toughest of tough, pitching the last seven innings and giving up only one hit on her way to being named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
Suffering the loss was Tawni Baker, who pitched five solid innings before allowing a single and walk in the 12th. She was relieved by Cassidy Lee, who had started the game and held the Warriors to one hit in her first four innings of work. Lee struck out the first hitter she faced,
Jennifer Arnold, before being stung by Guzman's decisive blast.
Cal State Stanislaus took the lead in the bottom of the second on
Casey Stephenson's leadoff home run. Cal State San Bernardino tied the game in its next at-bats, putting runners on via a single and walk before Priscilla Curiel drove home Debbie Shisler with a single of her own.
Gaumnitz, who went 3-0 in the tournament, was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
Jessica Scholl,
Alicia Reid,
Meghan Franksen, and
Kimiko Wright were all named to the All-Tournament team.
The victory is the Warriors' 17th consecutive win away from Turlock and they are now 20-5 in road game. It was the team's first conference championship.
