TURLOCK —
Andrew Stueve turned in a quality opening day start and the Warriors used two four-run innings to win their season opener over Central Washington, 9-3, on Wednesday.
Stueve, who was making his second straight opening day start, tossed seven strong innings as he struck out seven without a walk to pick up his 15th career win. Stueve, in fact, did not allow a hit until two outs in the sixth inning.
The win extends Cal State Stanislaus' win-streak over Central Washington to nine games dating back to 2008.
David Contreras went 2-for-4 and drove in three runs and
Michael Johnson also had two hits to lead the Warriors' 11-hit attack.
On the mound, Stueve faced the minimum through 5 2/3 innings until back-to-back Wildcat doubles that scoring a run. The only CWU baserunner prior to that point was in the third when Kris Henderson reached on a throwing error but was later erased trying to steal second.
Stanislaus scored four times in the home half of the fifth after
Vince Hungerford led-off the inning with a triple to left-center field. A walk issued to
DJ Arellano later,
Kory Vitato singled through the left side to score Hungerford for the first run. Later in the frame,
Thomas Shull drove in Arellano on a single to center and Vitato scored on a bunt play by Contreras to make it 3-0. Shull then scored on a wild pitch for a 4-0 Stanislaus lead.
After CWU scored twice in the sixth, the Warriors put up four more runs in the bottom of the inning. With the bases loaded,
Fred Atkins was hit by a pitch for a run before Contreras singled up the middle to score Arellano and Vitato. Johnson then drove in Atkins with a single to left.
The bottom of the Stanislaus lineup proved to be productive with the 6-7-8-9 batters scoring seven of the runs. They were 4-for-11 with three walks to set up RBI chances for the top of the order.
Relievers
Keith McDaniels and
Phil Quade each pitched an inning without allowing a hit to shut down the Wildcats.
Central Washington (0-1) starter Brandon Rohde was tagged with the loss. He pitched five innings and gave up four runs on six hits with four strikeouts and a walk. Nate Wallen doubled, drove in a run and scored to lead the Wildcats.
The same two teams will play again on Thursday with a 2 p.m. start at Warrior Baseball Field.
