TURLOCK — Cal State Stanislaus won its third one-run game in as many days as the Warriors wrapped up the series against Cal State Dominguez Hills with a 5-4 win on Sunday.
With the victory, the 26th ranked Warriors win the four-game series 3-1, and improved to 13-3 overall and 7-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Zach Cadet went 3-for-3 with two doubles and scored two runs to lead the Warriors offensively. Starter
Vinny Pacchetti pitched seven strong innings for the win. Pacchetti gave up one run on four hits while striking out seven.
Cal State Stanislaus had to hold-off a furious Toros rally in the final two innings on Sunday. For the first time in the series, CSUDH was able to score off the Warriors' bullpen. With the score 5-1, the Toros pushed across a run in the eighth with two singles off reliever
Ryan Vander Tuig.
In the Dominguez Hills ninth,
Michael Johnson gave up two runs on three hits to the Toros to make it a 5-4 game. Pinch-hitter Barrett Ceverha, who was batting .069 entering the day, scored two runs with a single to right-center field.
With Toros at first and third and two outs, CSUS head coach
Kenny Leonesio brought in
Phil Quade to try and end the game. On a 1-0 count, Quade got Kyle Pond to fly out to dead centerfield for the final out. Quade, who also picked up a win on Saturday, threw two pitches for the save.
The Warriors chased Cal State Dominguez Hills starter Sean Wardour in the first inning by scoring four runs before a second out was recorded.
Fred Atkins led-off the inning with a single to center then
Thomas Shull reached on a fielding error scoring Atkins.
David Contreras then singled to left to set-up first and third before Wardour was called on a balk to plate Shull.
After
Casey Filkins moved Contreras to third with a bunt, Cadet took a Wardour offer off the left field wall to score Contreras. Johnson then followed it with another double to center for the fourth run.
Cal State Stanislaus added another run in the fifth on a Cadet sac fly that scored Contreras who had singled ahead of a Filkins double.
Contreras finished with a 2-for-4 day and scored twice.
Colton Beatty also doubled in the game.
Cal State Dominguez Hills was led by three players -- Carols Leyva, Kevin Pillar, Jonathan Keener -- with two hits a piece. The Toros fall to 6-13 overall and 2-10 in the CCAA.
Before Sunday's game, the CSUS bullpen had not allowed a run in 10 2/3 innings in the first three games of the series.
The Warriors will host another four-game CCAA series next weekend when Cal Poly Pomona comes to town.
