PHOENIX --- Jessica Gaunmitz is becoming a Western Washington Vikings killer as she tossed a no-hitter in the Warriors 4-0 shutout win over WWU to start the Schutt Sports Leadoff Classic at Rose Mofford Softball Complex on Thursday.
Eastern New Mexico, however, handed the Warriors a 2-0 loss in the nightcap. ENMU's Kristen Cruickshank held Stanislaus to just one hit as the Zias won their 10th straight game and improved to 10-3.
After Gaumnitz walked the leadoff batter, she completely shut down the Vikings, sitting 21 straight hitters in order to earn her first career no-hitter --- the first Warrior no-hitter since Feb. 1. Only five balls hit by Western Washington left the infield.
"It feels great. I didn't even think about it until I heard (WWU) talking about it in their huddle," Gaumnitz said. "Our defense played well and made some great plays behind me. I am glad I was able to help our team win."
Offensively for the Warriors, both
Casey Stephenson and
Kimiko Wright homered. Stephenson also went 3-for-3 and drove in two runs.
The Warriors (1-5) stranded the bases loaded in the first inning after a failed suicide squeeze and an infield pop-up. In the third,
Alicia Reid got another rally going and scored on a Stephenson double to left. Stephenson later scored on a
Jessica Scholl single to left center.
"I was a little nervous at first but it became easier when the offense started to score runs to take some pressure off," said Wright, who added a solo homer in the fourth to make it 3-0.
Stephenson then hit another solo shot to deep center field to make it 4-0.
The win over Western Washington was the Warriors' fifth straight win and eight out of last nine.
The last time Gaumnitz and the Warriors faced WWU was in the West Regional tournament in Turlock lat May, when Gaumnitz pitched a one-hit shutout over the Vikings.
Gaumnitz's no-hitter was the Warriors' first since Feb. 1, 2006 when both Amanda Cantu and Omaira Estremera pitched no-no's against Dominican in a twinbill.
In the nightcap, the Zias started the sixth inning with an infield hit. After a failed bunt attempt for an out, the Zia put another bunt play down that
Sarah Shamblin threw away to set up a second and third with one out situation. Rebecca Quinones then singled in Laura Thompson for a 1-0 lead.
Stanislaus starter Jen Arnold got out of the jam by getting a strikeout and a grounder to keep the game at 1-0. Arnold pitched a solid game, allowing just five hits through the first six innings before bowing out with two outs in the seventh.
ENMU added another run in the seventh with a two-out single by Thompson that scored Anna Hershkowitz. Thompson finished with three hits in four at bats to lead the Zias.
The Warriors hit a lot of pop-ups and towering fly outs against ENMU's Cruickshank.
Jessica Scholl gave it a ride in the seventh, hitting a bomb to left but was caught at the wall by ENMU left fielder Hershkowitz.
The Warriors will complete pool play with a 1:30 game against Minnesota State-Mankato before bracket action begins Friday afternoon.
