TURLOCK -- A pair of impressive complete game starts from the pitching staffs of both No. 23 Cal State Stanislaus and No. 16 Chico State were enough to earn each team a victory as the Warriors took game one, 3-2, and the Wildcats won 5-2 in the nightcap for a doubleheader split Saturday at Warrior Field.
Two-time CCAA Pitcher of the Week and Cal State Stanislaus ace
Marquis Fleming went the distance in game one to pick up his fifth-straight win. Fleming struck out nine and allowed two runs while scattering six hits. The win was Fleming's third complete game victory this year.
With the split, the Warriors are now 16-5 overall and have a 9-2 CCAA record, tied for second place with UC San Diego after the Tritons split a doubleheader Saturday against Cal State L.A. The Wildcats are now 13-6 overall and 6-4 in CCAA play.
Game one was filled with more magic for the Warriors, as they fell behind 2-0 after the fourth inning, but scored single runs in the fifth and seventh innings to tie the score at two. Then, with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the ninth,
Adam Fonville hit a groundball to Wildcat second baseman Phil Boscarino, who bobbled the ball but recovered in time to make the throw, but first baseman Matt Bitker muffed it, allowing the winning run to score.
Catcher
Tom Long led off the ninth with a walk and
Jacob Thelen followed with a single. A fielder's choice moved the runners to scoring position.
David Contreras was intentionally walked to load the bases for a force play and
Dennis Wolfe struck out looking, bringing Fonville to the plate for the final play.
Chico State's Andrew Pluta was perhaps inspired by Fleming's performance in game one, as he took the mound in game two and threw his own complete game, two-run victory, moving his record to 3-2.
The Warriors mirrored Chico State from game one, taking a two-run lead after the third inning, capped by
Kyle Loretelli's fourth homerun of the season and second of the series, a solo shot hit directly to the same spot he hit the game winner on Friday.
Loretelli went 2-for-4 with three walks on the day to raise his batting average to .406. He entered the weekend batting .386.
Chico State jumped on Warrior starter
Matt Costa in the sixth inning, leading off with three straight singles and sending Costa to the bench. The Warriors would walk in two runs and Chico would tack on three more via hits by Josh Meagher and Nick Dingman to go up 5-2. Pluta and the Wildcats held off any more comeback vibes the Warriors had with two straight three up, three down innings to close the game.
The Warriors will go for the series win at noon on Sunday in the series finale at Warrior Field.
Eric Federico is slated to start for the Warriors while Kyle Woodruff takes the mound for Chico State.
